I just wanted to tell you about something our Play Group is doing with our old Play Group in Richmond, VA. I'm posting this because we would love it if other Play Groups joined us in this effort.
Last year, my friend's parents went to Africa on a service trip with their Rotary club. While they were there, they noticed that many babies were in need of receiving blankets. We realized that this was something simple enough to do in as a Play Group service project...so we're doing it. The blankets will need to be completed before the end of January.
They only need to be 1 yard and just one piece of material...they do not need to be backed or anything (since it is quite warm there). Just cut and hemmed (with a serger or a rolled edge is fine).
In order to include the kids with the service, we can have them "help" cut the fabric. We can also let them help us decorate it (if you want to include them that much). Plain fabrics can be decorated with hand-prints or simple stamped images (I originally thought of fabric paint, but that's not pliable enough for a baby blanket. Stays On ink and fabric pens should work...any other ideas?). Then while the kids play, the moms can take turns hemming. It may not hurt to ask fabric stores for donations/discounts on fabric.
Anyway, if anyone who reads this is interested in participating, please let me know. After I know who is participating, I will follow up with specifics.
